It is usually made from a sheer fabric similar to those used for stockings and tights, or from fishnet material. Thus, bodystockings are not normally considered acceptable as outerwear, and are meant to serve as a novelty item of lingerie. Other, more utilitarian kinds of bodystockings serve as an alternative to a camisole, and can be worn under a sheer blouse as a way of covering up the body without the lines of an underlayer showing through.
